If you have followed car news for the last nine years, you have heard the Tesla Roadster promise before. It was first shown in 2017 with a starting price of about $200,000 and a 2020 delivery date, and then it kept slipping. On 15 October 2026, Tesla finally put a redesigned second-generation Tesla Roadster on stage at a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas, and made it do something no road car has done in public: drive up an upside-down ramp, launch off the end, roll in the air and land on its wheels.
So what is real, what is showmanship, and when could anyone actually buy one? This guide sticks to what Tesla and credible reports have confirmed, and it tells you plainly where the answers are still missing.
What Tesla Showed at the Roadster Unveiling

The livestreamed event took place at a SpaceX facility near Waco. Elon Musk called the car "the best of the last of the human-driven cars." The prototype, with nobody inside, used four electric fans to create suction and cling to a curved, inverted ramp. It then fired compressed-gas thrusters, spun through the air and landed on its wheels. Tesla also showed it lifting itself over a line of Tesla vehicles, including a Cybertruck, a Semi, a Model Y and a Model 3.
Musk was honest about the risk. He said success was not guaranteed, but that it would "probably work." It did, at least for the cameras.
Does the Tesla Roadster Really Fly?
Not in the way the headlines suggest. What the audience saw were short, controlled bursts: a flip, a hop and a landing. Reports describe the airborne moments as brief and "a long way from sustained flight." The car did not hover above the ground or cruise through the sky like a helicopter.
The regulators are not treating it as a flying machine either. Tesla's own website says the car has not received approval for public road use, and the FAA told CBS News that the vehicle does not meet its definition of an aircraft. So for now, think of the "flying" part as a very dramatic party trick built on thrusters, not a new way to commute.
The SpaceX Package Explained

The headline feature is a thruster system developed with SpaceX technology. It is not a rocket engine burning fuel. Tesla describes cold-gas thrusters, which means high-pressure compressed air released through nozzles to push the car around. The air is stored in carbon-fibre-wrapped pressure vessels, and Tesla says every usable void in the car holds one. That is exactly the kind of hardware safety engineers will want to study closely before anything reaches customers.
Tesla showed three versions:
Performance: the road-focused car. It has two seats, active aerodynamics and the suction system, and no thrusters.
Thrust: the "race ready" car. It adds four rear cold-gas thrusters for a faster launch and is planned as a limited release.
Rocket: the "air ready" car. It has one seat, ten thrusters and a much larger air tank of roughly 600 litres, which takes about six to seven hours to refill. It is invitation only.
Tesla Roadster Specs: What Is Claimed
Everything below comes from Tesla's own claims. None of it has been independently tested on a production car.
The range claim deserves a note. In 2017, Tesla promised about 620 miles. The new target is roughly half of that. Musk also talked about an aspiration of around half the speed of sound, roughly 380 mph, but that is a goal, not something the car has shown.
Tesla Roadster Price: What We Know

There is no final price. Tesla has not announced a purchase price for any version, and Musk did not name one on stage. The only number on the table is the original 2017 figure of about $200,000, and it should not be treated as current.
What Tesla is taking right now are reservation payments:
Performance: a $5,000 deposit, then $45,000 within 10 days, for $50,000 in total.
Thrust: a $5,000 deposit, then $245,000 within 10 days, for $250,000 in total.
Rocket: no price disclosed, invitation only.
These are reservation amounts, not the sticker price. Tesla says reservations are refundable until you are invited to configure the car, but the money is not held in escrow and does not earn interest. If you are thinking of paying, read those terms carefully first.
Tesla Roadster Expected Launch Date
Musk says production should begin in 2028. Tesla itself calls that a target and says it cannot guarantee when a vehicle will be delivered, or whether it will be delivered at all.
That caution is earned. The Roadster was supposed to reach customers in 2020. It has been delayed repeatedly since the 2017 reveal, so treat 2028 as a hope rather than a date to plan around. Tesla has also not said which version would be built first.
Can You Buy a Tesla Roadster in Pakistan?

We could not find any announcement about Pakistani availability, and Tesla has not announced a Pakistan launch for this car. With no delivery schedule even in the United States, a Pakistani buyer would be waiting at the very back of the line. Add the fact that the car is not approved for public roads yet, and a Pakistan sale is a long way off.

Final Verdict
The Tesla Roadster is the most spectacular concept car stunt in years, and the demo was real. But a stunt is not a product. There is no final price, the 2028 production date is a target, the flying hardware is unproven outside a controlled demo, and the whole package still needs regulatory answers. If you want one, a refundable reservation is the only practical step, and only if you understand the terms. If you want a car for daily use, look at what is on sale today.
We will update this page when Tesla confirms pricing, a production schedule or Pakistan plans.
